With temperatures on the rise, and snow and ice seemingly nowhere in sight, it appears that winter is officially winding down. Spring is coming! This means it’s time to open up the shed, pull out those tools, and begin preparing your lawn for the growing season.

Knowing how to best prepare your lawn for spring is important. Especially when it comes to getting the upper hand on weeds, thatch, pests, and anything else that can cause harm to your landscape as the weather warms up. Here are 4 steps you can take right now to get your lawn ready for spring:

Step 1: Pre-Spring Cleaning

The first step you want to take in preparing your lawn for spring is a simple lawn cleanup. This includes:

  • Raking – Rake up any leftover leaves from autumn, along with dead grass blades and other debris. In doing so you are creating space for the healthy grass to grow and thrive.
  • Weeding – Weeds are thieves. They will steal essential nutrients your grass needs to grow in the spring. Head outside and pull those pesky weeds, and afterward apply a pre-emergent herbicide to prevent weeds from returning.
  • General cleanup – This includes picking up sticks and twigs, moving lawn furniture, picking up debris, and clearing your lawn to give it a fresh start.

Step 2: Take Care Of Your Trees and Shrubs

The second step involves your trees and shrubs, which when taken care of provide additional beauty to your landscape! This includes:

  • Trimming – Now is a great time to trim your trees because they are still bare. This allows you to see dead or diseased branches, which you can remove to promote new, healthy growth.
  • Insect Control – The best way to prevent insect damage to your trees and shrubs is through dormant oil applications. The oil will smother and suffocate overwintering pests (and their eggs), which will keep them from causing any type of damage come spring.
  • Deep root fertilization – Along with delivering important nutrients to your tree or shrubs root systems, deep root fertilization also: relieves compaction, aerates the soil, and provides disease and pest resistant nutrients.

Step 3: Cut The Grass Early and Often

When it comes time to mow (you usually want to wait until the grass is growing, and is at least two inches long), you’re going to want to do so early and often. If you let the grass grow too high it can damage the roots, and if you cut it too short the roots become exposed and can get damaged. As a general rule, only remove one-third of the length off the blades. Doing so will give you a healthier, greener lawn in the spring.
